The Soul selects her own society--
Then--shuts the Door

To her divine majority--

Present no more--

Unmoved--She notes the Chariots--pausing

At her low Gate--

Unmoved--An emperor be kneeling

Upon her mat--

I've known her--from an ample nation--

Choose one--

Then--Close the Valves of her attention--

Like Stone--

I chose this poem by Emily Dickinson because it showed a lot of transcendentalism in it. Highlighted above are the transcendent parts of the poem noted.

Summer Attraction

Paul Kelley

I passed over a river on my way to work.

The ice was but newly formed.

The wind was whipping through the trees;

Yet no snow was to be seen on the ground.

I drive along thinking of the sun.

Summer is once again on my mind.

The wind is warmer and the days aren’t chilled.

The grass is green and the river flows freely.

During these precious few months of warmth,

I like to spend a lot of time on the water.

I twist and turn through the swift flow.

I row and row until my energy is gone.

Still, the beauty of the scene entices me.

I want to be there, feel a part of nature.

I want to be a part of that living beauty,

To feel the sun caress my face and arms.

How can one ever be happier than here?

What peaceful feelings, what overwhelming contentment.

Is it because it is but brief that I enjoy it?

No, it is nature’s timeless attraction to me.

Sam N -Mrs. Fife's Class

I think that this poem work for transcendentalism because it has a lot about nature.

Becoming the Bull

By Atreyu

Come on!!!

Grab the bull by the horns the old adage goes.

Nobody tells you where to go from here.

Seems like fates pulling you.

Decisions have to be made.

The the best path is the hardest earned.

Back and forth the struggle consumes us all.

Trying to keep a level head.

In the most unsettling of times.

Today I'll become the bull.

There is so much to stake.

I stumble, I lose my place.

Pride and arrogance surrounded by sin.

Destiny takes its hold.

Fight it or let it go.

But I choose how the day will end.

Back and forth the struggle consumes us all.

Trying to keep a level head.

In the most unsettling of times.

Today I'll become the bull. x2

This walk can get lonley

I lose myself inside my head.

No one can touch you when you're outside staring in.

Remove myself from this rat race.

Back and forth the struggle consumes us all.

Trying to keep a level head.

The most unsettling of times.

Today I'll become the bull. x5

Nature’s playful Apron strings—Bridal Lace—

White linen graced with Lilies—

Mother’s delicate handiwork,

Trimmed with

Wafting—weightless—on a breeze,tradition—

Peridot ambition—

Sun-kissed Laughter—skips ahead—

The Annual

Traded for an Overcoat—

Grey flannel—overworn—

Drowsy—ends her daydream,

And sights a Winter storm.

The highlighted areas show where the daughter was rebelling her mother. Her mother wanted her to wear the traditional white lace and linen, but, the daughter wanted to be different and wear the overcoat. The daughter talkes about being in nature. Individulasim and nature is what trancendentalism is about.

A Flowing River and a Tree

Hymns, #509

Capo 1

A

1. A flowing river and a tree,

Eden’s outstanding features are,

Man to supply with food and drink

B7 E E7

That he may live fore’er.

Chorus:

A E

God is in Christ to be my supply,

God as the Spirit nourisheth me;

A7 D

If upon Christ in spirit I feed,

A E A

Filled with His life I’ll be.

2. The tree the glorious Christ does show,

As living food to man supplied,

That he God’s riches may enjoy,

Thus to be satisfied.

3. The river does the Spirit show,

Coming man’s spirit to supply,

That with God’s riches he be filled,

Holy to be thereby.

4. The Christ of glory is my life,

He as the Spirit lives in mine,

That I with God be fully blent

And in His image shine.

5. I would exalt this glorious Christ,

Ever the Spirit I’d obey,

Making His glory fully known,

Filled with His grace for aye.

FANCIES - Lucy Maud Montgomery

SURELY the flowers of a hundred springs

Are simply the souls of beautiful things!

The poppies aflame with gold and red

Were the kisses of lovers in days that are fled.

The purple pansies with dew-drops pearled

Were the rainbow dreams of a youngling world.

The lily, white as a star apart,

Was the first pure prayer of a virgin heart.

The daisies that dance and twinkle so

Were the laughter of children in long ago.

The sweetness of all true friendship yet

Lives in the breath of the mignonette.

To the white narcissus there must belong

The very delight of a maiden's song.

And the rose, all flowers of the earth above,

Was a perfect, rapturous thought of love.

Oh! surely the blossoms of all the springs

Must be the souls of beautiful things.

Kayla Huffman-Woods

I think that the whole poem relates to transcendentalism because it vividly describes things in nature and links these images to the "beautiful things" in our lives. It shows how our lives are entwined with beauty just as nature is.

Jason Meadows, 100 Percent Cowboy Lyrics

I don't claim to be John Wayne

Ridin' across that silver screen

I ain't that picture in your head all

These modern day wanna b's

I'm just proud that I can say

I don't wear this hat for show or fame

And if you don't like who I am

You got momma daddy and good Lord to blame, amen.

I'm a straight up no joking buck knife gun totting give you the shirt off my back.

Well I'm up at the crack of dawn work till the suns gone. I ain't got time for no crap.

No in not one of them posing pretty boys.

I'm an every day all the way 100% cowboy.

Ive always tuck my shirt in,

Ive creased my old blue jeans,

And I don't do it cause its who somebody said I outta be.

Yea when I'm layin' in that old pine box

And all my family is gathered around

They'll say "there goes a dying breed six feet in the ground"

I'm a straight up no joking buck knife gun totting give you the shirt off my back.

Well I'm up at the crack of dawn work till the suns gone. I ain't got time for no crap.

No in not one of them posing pretty boys.

I'm an every day all the way 100% cowboy.

Well I'm not one of them posing pretty boys.

I'm an every day all the way cowboy, I'm a cowboy.

I said I'm a cowboy.

100% cowboy. Just like Chris Ledoux, YEA Im a cowboy

The reson I picked this song is because he talks about doing things the way he want to and not because people tell him to. He stands up for what he thinks is right and doesnt go with the flow. I highlighted the parts I thought we transcendentalsm. Chelsee Lisk -woods

Lyrics - Cool Change

If there's one thing in my life that's missing

It's the time I spend alone

Sailing on the cool and bright clear waters

There's lots of those friendly people

Showin me ways to go

And I never want to lose your inspiration

Time for

a cool change...

I know that it's time

for a cool change

Now that my life

is so pre-arranged

I know that it's time

for a cool change

Well I was born in the sign of water

And it's there that I feel my best

The albatross and the whales

they are my brothers

It's kind of a special feeling

When you're out on the sea alone

Starin' at the full moon

like a lover

Time for

a cool change...

I know that it's time

for a cool change

Now that my life

is so prearranged

I know that it's time

for a cool change

Well I've never been romantic

And sometimes I don't care

I know it may sound selfish

But let me breathe the air

If there's one thing in my life that's missing

It's the time that I spend alone

Sailing on the cool and bright clear waters

It's kind of a special feeling

When you're out on the sea alone

Staring at the full moon like a lover

Time for

a cool change...

I know that it's time

for a cool change

Now that my life is so prearranged

I know that it's time

for a cool change

I Am A Rock

P. Simon, 1965

Featured on Sounds of SilenceA winter's day

In a deep and dark December

I am alone

Gazing from my window

To the streets below

On a freshly fallen silent shroud of snow

I am a rock

I am an island

I've built walls

A fortress deep and mighty

That none may penetrate

I have no need of friendship

Friendship causes pain

It's laughter and it's loving I disdain

I am a rock

I am an island

Don't talk of love

Well I've heard the word before

It's sleeping in my memory

I won't disturb the slumber

Of feelings that have died

If I never loved I never would have cried

I am a rock

I am an island

I have my books

And my poetry to protect me

I am shielded in my armor

Hiding in my room

Safe within my womb

I touch no one and no one touches me

I am a rock

I am an island

And a rock feels no pain

And an island never cries

SUMMARY: This song is saying being alone is a good thing because that way people can’t hurt you. It is saying all a person needs are books and poetry to survive and in a way protect him or her from the people around them. So that way, like a rock you feel no pain and like an island, you never cry.

----Allison Sargent, Mrs. Woods class

Self- Relience

"Ne Te quaesiveris extra"

"A man is his own star, and the soul that can

Render an honest and a perfect man.

Commands all night, all influence, all fate;

Nothing to him fails early or too late.

Our acts our angels are, or good or ill.

Our fatal shadows that walk by us still."

In this little part of Emerson's poem he tells us about self relience, which is an example of transcendentalism. In this is he stresses the relying on ones self for knowledge and guidance. This is one of the major reasons that I choose this part of the poem.

"Unwritten"

by Natasha Bedingfield

I am unwritten,

Can't read my mind

I'm undefined

I'm just beginning

The pen's in my hand

Ending unplanned

Staring at the blank page before you

Open up the dirty window

Let the sun illuminate the words

That you could not find

Reaching for something in the distance

So close you can almost taste it

Release your inhibitions

Feel the rain on your skin

No one else can feel it for youOnly you can let it in

No one else, no one elseDrench yourself in words unspoken

Can speak the words on your lips

Live your life with arms wide open

Today is where your book begins

The rest is still unwritten, yeah

Oh, oh

I break tradition

Sometimes my tries

Are outside the lines, oh yeah yeah

We've been conditioned

To not make mistakes

But I can't live that way oh, oh

Staring at the blank page before you

Open up the dirty window

Let the sun illuminate the words

That you could not find

Reaching for something in the distance

So close you can almost taste it

Release your inhibitions

Feel the rain on your skin

No one else can feel it for you

Only you can let it in

No one else, no one elsedrench yourself in words unspoken

Can speak the words on your lips

Live your life with arms wide open

Today is where your book begins

---I Think that this song is a great example of being yourself and not following the crowd. Having the confidence it takes to go out and do things that no one else dares to do, like the people who are scared of nonconformity. "Feel the rain on your skin, no one else can feel it for you" or saying that no one can read your mind "I'm undefined" is also an example of doing things you want to do without worrying what others will say. You write your own life and what you do with it is up to you. Whether you follow the crowd and let them write your life or leave it "unwritten" as Natasha says is your choice.

--Kelcyn Taft (Fife)

The Daffodils

I wandered lonely as a cloud

That floats on high o'er vales and hills,

When all at once I saw a crowd,

A host, of golden daffodils;

Beside the lake, beneath the trees,

Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine

And twinkle on the Milky Way,

They stretched in never-ending line

Along the margin of a bay:

Ten thousand saw I at a glance,

Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced, but they

Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:

A Poet could not but be gay,

In such a jocund company:

I gazed--and gazed--but little thought

What wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lie

In vacant or in pensive mood,

They flash upon that inward eye

Which is the bliss of solitude;

And then my heart with pleasure fills,

And dances with the daffodils.

William Wordsworth

Summery:

I picked this song because it realates to transcendentalism, it's all about nature. When William Wordsworth sees The Daffodils acrossed the hills side they make him happy. When he gets home he can look back on that day and think of how happy the flowers made him that day.

Earth Voices

I heard the spring light whisper
Above the dancing stream,
"The world is made forever
In likeness of a dream.
"I am the law of planets,
I am the guide of man;
The evening and the morning
Are fashioned to my plan.
"I tint the dawn with crimson,
I tinge the sea with blue;
My track is in the desert,
My trail is in the dew.
"I paint the hills with color,
And in my magic dome
I light the star of evening
To steer the traveller home.
"Within the house of being,
I feed the lamp of truth
With tales of ancient wisdom
And prophecies of youth."

Bliss Carman

Kasey Grover

Summery: This poem is the earth reflecting on all the things in nature that God made. It uses a lot of adjectives to describe all the beauty that the earth has.

Moonlight Ride

By Kathy TimeoniIn the still of a warm summer's night,

I venture towards the barn with saddle in hand.

Stirrups dangle and clang with no one in sight,

I blissfully tack up my steed for a moonlight ride.

We glide together through sweet smelling meadows,

Not a care in the world only smiles.

Guided by the moon's light and shadows,

We quickly move up the hill for another view.

Wind in our hair and sparks in our stride,

We fly through the hilltop's water mists.

There's nothing like this but pride.

Our backs to city lights, the other view,

We find calmness of the trail.

A warm summer breeze upon us,

We see a mother and her quail.

The barn in sight, we pick up speed.

Laughter is in the air,

What a ride it's been,

And we race on without a care.

We proudly halt, and walk into the barn.

Summery: I picked this poem because its all about nature. This poem is in the view of Kathy and a friend (I assume), taking a horse ride in the night to enjoy the sounds and pleasures that only nature can bring us. Even when they must return to the city, they're still happy with what they just witnessed.

"Free" Reprise
Mark:

I was in Tourettaville

far away from here

and then I met some aliens

who took away my fear.

Now I know the way

I have a magic key

'cause when I use my head and heart

then I am...

FREE...

Spoken: Now, I have good days and some bad days too. But things keep on gettin' better and better, because I like myself more and I understand why I do the stuff I do. I told my buddies about it and they only tease me a little bit. Best of all, I know that my family loves me ... exactly for who I am.

I am free, I can fly...

Mom, Dad & Mandy:

Now you can fly.

Mark:

I am free, I can try...
Mom, Dad & Mandy:
Now you can try...

Mark:

to be anyone I wanna be

Now I can...

Mom, Dad & Mandy:

(puts on hats)

Now he can...

Now we can be..

FREE.

Mark:

(puts on hat)

Now I can be me.

Carissa Moore

Summary: I believe this hads a lot to do with self confidence because Mark is finally becoming comfortable with his problems. (He has mental problems.) Also, it deals with free thought because he is going out and taking a risk to look past his troubles and be "free".

Michael Jackson - "Earth Song"

What about sunrise

What about rain

What about all the things

That you said we were to gain.. .

What about killing fields

Is there a time

What about all the things

That you said was yours and mine...

Did you ever stop to notice

All the blood we've shed before

Did you ever stop to notice

The crying Earth the weeping shores?

Aaaaaaaaaah Aaaaaaaaaah

What have we done to the world

Look what we've done

What about all the peace

That you pledge your only son...

What about flowering fields

Is there a time

What about all the dreams

That you said was yours and mine...

Did you ever stop to notice

All the children dead from war

Did you ever stop to notice

The crying Earth the weeping shores

Aaaaaaaaaaah Aaaaaaaaaaah

I used to dream

I used to glance beyond the stars

Now I don't know where we are

Although I know we've drifted far

Aaaaaaaaaaah Aaaaaaaaaaaah

Aaaaaaaaaaah Aaaaaaaaaaaah

Carissa Moore

Summary: This songs deals with a A LOT of nature, it's what the song was written for. Mikey J expresses his feelings on how people are ruining the earth.

"Back When"

Don't you remember

The fizz in a pepper

Peanuts in a bottle

At ten, two and four

A fried bologna sandwich

With mayo and tomato

Sittin' round the table

Don't happen much anymore

We got too complicated

It's all way over-rated

I like the old and out-dated

Way of life

Back when a hoe was a hoe

Coke was a coke

And crack's what you were doing

When you were cracking jokes

Back when a screw was a screw

The wind was all that blew

And when you said I down with that

Well it meantyou had the flu

I miss back when

I miss back when

I miss back when

I love my records

Black, shiny vinly

Clicks and pops

And white noise

Man they sounded fine

I had my favorite stations

The ones that played them all

Country, soul and rock-and-roll

What happened to those times?

I'm readin' Street Slang For Dummies

Cause they put pop in my country

I want more for my money

The way it was back then

Chorus

Give me a flat top for strumming

I want the whole world to be humming

Just keep it coming

The way it was back then

Chorus

~Marcie Blackburn-Mrs.Woods

I thought this song was good cause it talk about change and how he wishes it would go back to the simple days. When one object didn't have two meanings.

GREEN DAY,they are the singers, LYRICSsong:"Boulevard Of Broken Dreams"I walk a lonely road

The only one that I have ever known

Don't know where it goes

But it's home to me and I walk alone

I walk this empty street

On the Boulevard of Broken Dreams

Where the city sleeps

and I'm the only one and I walk alone

I walk alone

I walk alone

I walk alone

I walk a...

My shadow's the only one that walks beside me

My shallow heart's the only thing that's beating

Sometimes I wish someone out there will find me

'Til then I walk alone

Ah-ah, Ah-ah, Ah-ah, Aaah-ah,

Ah-ah, Ah-ah, Ah-ah

I'm walking down the line

That divides me somewhere in my mind

On the border line

Of the edge and where I walk alone

Read between the lines

What's ... up and everything's alright

Check my vital signs

To know I'm still alive and I walk alone

I walk alone

I walk alone

I walk alone

I walk a...

My shadow's the only one that walks beside me

My shallow heart's the only thing that's beating

Sometimes I wish someone out there will find me

'Til then I walk alone

Ah-ah, Ah-ah, Ah-ah, Aaah-ah

Ah-ah, Ah-ah

I walk alone

I walk a...

I walk this empty street

On the Boulevard of Broken Dreams

Where the city sleeps

And I'm the only one and I walk a...

My shadow's the only one that walks beside me

My shallow heart's the only thing that's beating

Sometimes I wish someone out there will find me

'Til then I walk alone...

I Think that parts of this song relate perfectly to transcendentalism. The whole rest of the world is just one but he is different and has free thought. Parts of the song like when he says, "I'm walking down the line that divides me somewhere in my mind on the border line of the edge and where I walk alone." shows how he is struggling to figure out his life on his own full of free thought. Even though sometimes he wishes someone else would join him in his walk he still steps out of his way to walk alone and figure things out for himself. ~Kristina Kirkham (Fifes)

~Kristina K. again (Fife)

There are many other songs that also have parts that relate to transcendentalism. Here is one of them.

ARTIST: Rick Nelson

TITLE: Garden Party

Lyrics and Chords

I went to a garden party to reminisce with my old friends

A chance to share old memories and play our songs again

When I got to the garden party, they all knew my name

No one recognized me, I didn't look the same

/ D - G - D - G - / D A Bm - G A7 D - / 1st /

/ D - G - Em7 A7 D - /

{Refrain}

But it's all right now, I learned my lesson well

You see, you can't please everyone, so you got to please yourself

/ G A D - G A D - / G - D - Em7 A7 D - /

People came from miles around, everyone was there

Yoko brought her walrus, there was magic in the air

And over in the corner, much to my surprise

Mr. Hughes hid in Dylan's shoes wearing his disguise

{Refrain}

Played them all the old songs, thought that's why they came

No one heard the music, we didn't look the same

I said hello to Mary Lou, she belongs to me

When I sang a song about a honky-tonk, it was time to leave

{Refrain}

Someone opened up a closet door and out stepped Johnny B. Goode

Playing guitar like a-ringin' a bell and lookin' like he should

If you gotta play at garden parties, I wish you a lotta luck

But if memories were all I sang, I rather drive a truck

{Refrain}

This song came to my mind because of the chorus. It also is the part that sticks in my head when the song is done playing. "But it's all right now, I learned my lesson well you see, you can't please everyone, so you got to please yourself". I think this relates to Transcendentalism because in the end he learned not to follow the crowd. No matter what he did if he tried to follow the crowd someone else wasn't happy. He learned to follow himself and think for himself because it no longer mattered what anyone else thought to him.

"Nobody's Home"- Avril Lavigne

I couldn't tell you why she felt that way,

She felt it everyday.

And I couldn't help her,

I just watched her make the same mistakes again.

What's wrong, what's wrong now?

Too many, too many problems.

Don't know where she belongs, where she belongs.

She wants to go home, but nobody's home.

It's where she lies, broken inside.

With no place to go, no place to go to dry her eyes.

Broken inside.

Open your eyes and look outside, find the reasons why.

You've been rejected, and now you can't find what you left behind.

Be strong, be strong now.

Too many, too many problems.

Don't know where she belongs, where she belongs.

She wants to go home, but nobody's home.

It's where she lies, broken inside.

With no place to go, no place to go to dry her eyes.

Broken inside.

Her feelings she hides.

Her dreams she can't find.

She's losing her mind.

She's fallen behind.

She can't find her place.

She's losing her faith.

She's fallen from grace.

She's all over the place.

Yeah,oh

She wants to go home, but nobody's home.

It's where she lies, broken inside.

With no place to go, no place to go to dry her eyes.

Broken inside.

She's lost inside, lost inside...oh oh yeah

She's lost inside, lost inside...oh oh yeah

Summer Attraction

Paul Kelley

I passed over a river on my way to work.

The ice was but newly formed.

The wind was whipping through the tress;

Yet no snow was to be seen on the ground.

I drive along thinking of the sun.

Summer is once again on my mind.

The wind is warmer and the days aren't chilled.

To feel the sun caress my face and arms,

How can one ever be happier than here?

What peaceful feelings, what overwhelming contentment.

Is it because it is but brief that I enjoy it?

No, it is nature's timeless attraction to me.

- This song describes how the author feels about nature. He feels that it is relaxing and very content place. To him, there is not a better place to be in peace than nature. He feels as one with nature and himself, and it is the most beautiful place to be.

What lies beyond?

What haven’t I seen?

We’ve got it all.

We’ve conquered everything.

I still say there’s more.

I still say remains unseen,

Whether I be wrong.

Whether it’s just a dream.

How do you know?

How could you think

We’ve run our course?

We’ve just reached the brink.

Our hunger is eternal.

Our need just won’t slow.

And so we’ll look deeper,

And knowledge will grow.

Knowledge is blissful, yet

Knowledge needs kept in hand.

Lest we think to grow careless,

Lest we destroy with our plans.

Summary: This poem dispalys trancendenalism because this person is asking himself questions. (hippy) In all seriousness, it explains how there is much more in the world to experience than all of the materialistic things that most Americans are accustomed to.

Good job! I really like some of your choices here. It's pretty cool to see you guys relate the complex idea of trancendentalism to modern music and poetry.
